UNIT FOUR: MODERNISM

ELAALRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.

ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

ELAALRL5 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

ELAALRC2 The student participates in discussions related to curricular learning in all subject areas.

ELAALRC3 The student acquires new vocabulary in each content area and uses it correctly.

1. Create a new post on your blog called "Unit Four", and then explain which of the above standards you have had the most difficulty mastering. Make specific references to the work you have done in this class in your response.

ELAALRC2 The student participates in discussions related to curricular learning in all subject areas. I think this was the most difficult one for me because i have trouble participating i dont really participate alot or discuss a subjuct.

2. Choose one of the Modernism themes named above that you are most interested in studying: Disillusionment, the Harlem Renaissnace, The Jazz Age, or Phychoanalysis. Write a paragraph that describes why you made this choice and how you expect to see the topic you chose represented in the literature you are about to read.

I chose the harlem renaissnace because i think it will be a good topic and story to read. I chose it also because i expect it to have a good representation in literature & have alot of literary tems in the story we are going to read and i hope its going to able to explain some of the topics in literature. =)

3. Read the story that coresponds to the theme you chose. Chose a topic according to your interests, not the length of the story. Choosing a story because of its length is not the wisest way to approach this assignment.

4. Read the following poems. When you study poetry, it is a good habit to read each selection MORE THAN ONCE.

I think it is a good habit to read the story more than once because when you read it more then once you get to understand even more & more of what you are ready in the poems and it helps you.

Write a paragraph response to each poem in which you explain your opinions about what is being written as well as identify one of the elements of Modernism in each. These paragraphs must contain direct evidence from the poetry to support whatever claims you make. Please be thorough enough in this section so not to have to go back and make adjustmetns after I read your work.

FIRST POEM PEOPLE ALWAYS LOOKED AT RICHARD COREY BECAUSE I GUESS THEY THOGHT HE ALWAYS LOOKED REALLY ELEGANT AND HAD MONEY.

SECOND POEM

5. Review your response to number 1 in this unit. Then explain how you have addressed the Georgia Performance Standard you said was a challenge for you. You should support this claim with evidence from your own work.

SECOND WRITING

Soccer
Soccer is one of the most popular sports in Europe and the Americas. It has a vivid and interesting history in the world of sports. Early evidence of soccer being played as a sport finds occurrence in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In China, it was during the Han dynasty that people dribbled leather balls by kicking it into a small net. It is said that early growth of the modern soccer started in England. Some amusing facts even mention that the first ball used was the head of some Danish brigand. It is said that during medieval times, the old form of soccer used to allow many ill practices like kicking, punching, biting and gouging.

The history of modern-day soccer was established in 1863. In October 1863, eleven representatives from London clubs and schools. The outcome of this meeting was the formation of the Football Association. In December 1863, the Rugby Football and Association football finally split as the supporters of the Rugby School rules walked out. Firmly establishing the foundation of soccer in 1869, the Football Association strictly banned any kind of handling of the ball. Soccer’s popularity spread rapidly during the 1800s as British sailors, traders and soldiers introduced the sport to different parts of the globe.
Soccer positions can be confusing, especially if you have just started to play soccer. It took me a while to figure out what a sweeper, fullback or central midfielder is, but of course I didn’t give up and I figured it out now here are some of details. If you want to play as sweeper in soccer you should have a good understanding of the game and also strong leadership abilities. Your main task is to control the defense of your team and to always stay behind your fullbacks. The center fullbacks (or stopper’s) main task is to mark the opposing team forwards or central midfielders. Distributing the ball to the midfielders and playing offensively at intervals is also an important skill if you want to perform well as stopper. Playing as the central midfielder requires good passing and ball handling skills. You must also distribute the ball safely among the offenders while doing everything to stop or slow down your opponent’s offensive attacks before they reach your last defensive line. Well there are so many more positions that you can play but I just said some of them and its not hard play.
Soccer health benefits: Soccer can be a great workout and lots of fun. The health benefits include:
Increases aerobic capacity and cardiovascular health
Lowers body fat and improves muscle tone
Builds strength, flexibility and endurance
Increases muscle and bone strength
Improved health due to shifts between walking, running and sprinting.
There are many other benefits from playing a team sport like soccer and plus it helps you exercise, keep a good shape & health.

UNIT THREE- DARK ROMANTICISM AND REALISM

ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.

I think it means that we should be able to demonstrate in all of the different writings that we have what our ideas mean and be able to understand our writing..

Short Review:
1. What is original sin?

An Original sin i think is the condition of sin that marks all humans, as an outcome of Adam and Eve's first act of disobedience.

2. How did the Transcendentalists feel about it?

They believed that people were very good and that all the people could not be sinners because they thought that god will always be there for them.

Mini-Lesson:
Just like every other movement in American Literature you have studied (Puritanism, Rationalism, Romanticm, and Transcendentalism) Dark Romanticism is a reaction to the movement that came before it. Dark Romanticism is a little different because it coincides with Transcendentalism. Sometimes the Dark Romantics are known as Anti-Transcendentalists for this reason.

First, let's review the Transcendentalist philosophy:

a. They believed that everyone was absolutely pure and that each individual is a part of God.

b. They believed that people's thoughts and intuition were the voice of God.

c. They did not believe in institutions like government because they thought the individual human mind was the strongest power in the universe.

What would your argument to this philosophy be? Are all people good? Is the voice inside people's heads the pure voice of God?

My opinion is that what the Transcendentalists are saying and believed is not true because all the people are not good persons. Some people could be real mean at the time and is not because of the pure voice of god inside their heads i think is the devil inside them telling them to do bad things. So not all the people can be good people...

2. Which side of the divide do you fall? Are you closer to being a Transcendentalist or a Dark Romantic? Explain your answer with a short paragraph.

I think i would closer be more into like the transcendentalist because i also think we come from God and our minds are one of the strongest thing we have.

Work Period:
3. Read either
"The Black Cat" or "Hop-Frog", both by Edgar Allen Poe. As you read, keep the Dark Romantics' beliefs in mind because you will be asked to point out these beliefs in the story later. You can also choose to listen to "The Masque of Red Death" below; if you do, be sure to read the text as you listen:

4. Write a 2-3 paragraph response to the story you read. You should explain what you thought of the story as well as how well it illustrates how the Dark Romantics disagreed with the Transcendantalists. You need to provide at least a line or two of direct textual evidence from the story you chose to prove your claim.

5. Once of Poe's most famous works was "The Raven", a poem he wrote while his second wife was literally dying in the next room. Read the poem (more than once), and then write a response (at least two paragraphs) that includes a few lines that stuck out to you. Add another paragraph or two that should explain how this poem represents an anti-Transcendental idea. As always, responses with direct evidence are always better than those that do not.

6. A symbol is something (usually an object) that stands for a much larger idea. Poe uses symbolism very weill in "The Raven". Can you identify it, and then support what you say with some evidence and analysis? I know you can.

Its a symbol of death as metioned earlier. Its a symbol to let you know that someone has died or there will be death in the story and it also represents that what ever Edgar ask the raven the raven said that its never going to happen.

7. Check these out. If you are doing what you should, you are addressing all three (and even more) in this unit. Using your word as DIRECT evidence (cut and paste from your own post) tell me how you are meeting these standards.

UNIT TWO- ROMANTICISM AND TRANSCENDENTALISM

ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

I think it means that we should be able to take a good look at what we read and be able to understand what was the story about or tell exactly what you think happen.

The theme tells you what is the story, paragraph, or whatever you reading is about. it also lets you know what is a story or something going to be about.

What about the story did you find particularly Romantic?
You may want to reread the section on Romanticism again to refresh your memory. Give at least two examples with direct evidence for each.

I think the story was partly romantic because romanticism is made by your imagination or could also be said to be things that are not real so one part where i thought it was romantic was that he was real helpful around the city he would never refused to help people, but rather to do others work than his own work at home .I think this is romantic because his always trying to help people out and he would probably do others peoples work before he did his.

How does this poem illustrate all three of the main themes of Romanticism? Make sure you provide evidence for each claim you make.
1. In the beginning he talks about nature one of the romanticism themes. He also talks about death and if you're scare of it go outside and listen to the voice of mother nature. Therefor, he says that we came from the earth and we have to go back to nature and that's how nature suppose to be.
2. One of the second things is rip van winkle is very good example romanticism because it tends to take your imagination on a trip. We all know you cannot sleep 20 years. He fall asleep and thought it was the next day but it was the next year. so that is why i think this is a good theme.

5. When you are through reading, post a 1-2 paragraph response to each piece of writing to your blog. Be sure to concentrate more on what you thought of each piece of writing. Try to include at least one piece of direct evidence with each response (remember standard #1). This should be something that stuck out to you about the particular piece of writing.

In this story i agree with him, because nature is a nice place to just sit and think. He said nature was a great place to be when you need to get in touch with your inner self, but nature can be bad sometime, because you are just remembering stuff that happen to you and you get depressed...

" Nature is not always tricked in holiday attire"
This is a good piece of transcendentalism, because they believed god talked to them thru their minds and i think its true because everybody has their own beliefs. This story he feels he is a part of God, because he left society to be alone and to think about nature, himself, and God. This is an example when he says " I am part or parcel of God".

7. How can you apply Transcendental philosophy to the man in this video? I'm sure you could easily spend a couple paragraphs telling me how. I also know it would be easy for you to back up whatever you say with direct evidence from the texts you have already read. If you are really into it, you might read a little of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. Just choose a couple sections you think you would like.

Daddy Yankee

Ramón Ayala Rodriguez
Born February 3, 1977, in San Juan, Puerto Rico and was influenced by several musicians in his family, including his father and some of his mother's relatives. In August 2007, Pepsi began an advertising campaign titled "Puertas", in which Ayala is depicted returning to his youth by opening a series of doors. Ayala has also worked in the film industry as both an actor and producer. His acting debut was the lead role of Vampiros, a film directed by Eduardo Ortiz and filmed in Puerto Rico. The film premiered at the Festival of Latin American Cinema in New York, where it received a positive reaction. This led Image Entertainment to produce a DVD, internationally released in March 2005. Ayala played the main role "Edgar" in Talento de Barrio, which was filmed in Puerto Rico and directed by José Iván Santiago. Ayala produced the film, which is based on his experience of growing up in a poor city neighborhood. While the film is not directly a biography, Ayala has stated that it mirrors his early life.

UNIT ONE- EARLY AMERICAN LITERATURE

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

i think it means that we should be able to work with the past, present and future.

"While living I want to live well.I know I have to die sometime, but even if the heavens were to fall on me I want to do what is right.

There is only one God looking down on us all.We are all children of the one God.God is listening to me.The sun,the darkness, the winds, all are listening to what we now say..."

I think this is a great example because for me it means that you should do everything that you can while you are alive and always try to do whats right. I think that there is not really a difference because both paragraphs have almost the same meanings and they mean the same thing..

Read the excerpt from The Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin in the red American Literature book. Pay special attention to the efforts Franklin made to improve his life.
Give one example from The Autobiography of how Franklin is a good example of a rationalist. Make sure you explain why, and provide an example straight from the text.

declaration of independence- makes references to certain rights.
deism- a popular religious movement of the time with a body of ideas.
Industry: don't loose time, always be employed in something useful, and cut off all unnecessary actions.
Justice: Wrong none, by doing injuries or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
Moderation: Avoid extremes. Forebear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
Tranquility: Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.

There is a couple differences between the Puritans and the Rationalist. The differences between Puritans and the Rationalists.i think that they are really different because a rationalist would believe that everything could be understood through science and puritans thought that this was like an insult to god because they believed that humans had nothing to do with reconstructing gods work.

GEORGIA STANDARDS.

I think it means that we should be able todemonstrate things by identifying evidence of whats been told or read. i also think imaginary means that we can imagine things by just listening to what was been told or read too. point of view is observing or considering a standpoint, symbolism is a symbol that represents something. well i also think that the georgia standards is telling us that we should be able to undestand what we are reading.
